Like anything you buy for the exterior of your home or yard, cupolas always look smaller on your roof than in the showroom. Your cupola should measure (at the very least) 1 inch of cupola base horizontally for each 1 foot of ridge on the building. Steeper buildings may require at least 1^1/4 inches of base per 1 foot of ridge.

Here is an example:

An 8/12 pitch means the roof drops 8 inches vertically for every 12 inches horizontally.
